Week #3

Spiritual prompt: Quote by Gordon B. Hinckley: “Each of us can do a little better than we have been doing. We can be a little more kind. We can be a little more merciful. We can be a little more forgiving. We can put behind us our weaknesses of the past, and go forth with new energy and increased resolution to improve the world about us, in our homes, in our places of employment, in our social activities.”

How can we apply editing principles to living the gospel?

11/24/2025

The principles of accuracy, clarity, and kindness in editing connect closely to how we live the gospel. Just as a piece of writing becomes stronger when we remove errors and refine our message, our discipleship becomes stronger when we work to correct our flaws with humility and love. If writing is full of errors, the real message becomes hard to understand. Likewise, when our actions are inconsistent or careless, it becomes harder for others to see the influence of Christ in our lives.

Editing also teaches us the importance of truth. Sharing incorrect information in writing misleads readers, just as careless or unkind behavior can mislead others about what the gospel truly teaches. Striving to be “correct” in our actions builds trust and strengthens our character.

Of course, not every issue has a single right answer, just as not every piece of writing has a perfect version. But the way we approach disagreements and imperfections matters. When we, as President Hinckley taught, choose to be a little kinder, a little more patient, and more willing to improve, we are essentially “editing” our lives. We refine our weaknesses, build upon our strengths, and present a clearer reflection of discipleship to the world.

Ultimately, gospel living and good editing have the same goal: to refine, uplift, and communicate truth with love.

Professional prompt: In your opinion, what strengths does feature writing have over news writing? What weaknesses?

11/25/2025

Feature writing and news writing each serve important but very different purposes. Feature writing allows for more emotion, personality, and even subtle opinion. This makes it powerful in building human connections and helping readers understand the deeper meaning behind a topic. By tapping into storytelling, features can create empathy and highlight perspectives that might otherwise be overlooked.

News writing, on the other hand, prioritizes facts, clarity, and neutrality. Its strength lies in presenting information without emotional influence so readers can form their own conclusions. News should strive to avoid bias and focus solely on what happened, why it matters, and who is affected.

In my opinion, both forms are necessary for a full understanding of the world. Feature writing offers humanity, helping us connect with others and see complex issues through personal stories. News writing provides the essential, unbiased facts that keep us informed. Together, they allow readers to stay aware while also gaining insight into the lived experiences behind the headlines.

Professional prompt: How has frequent blog writing impacted you so far?

11/26/2025

Frequent blog writing has helped me grow more confident in expressing myself. Having to put my thoughts into words forces me to slow down, organize my ideas, and articulate them clearly and concisely. I’ve always had strong opinions and internal reflections, but writing them out has helped me better understand my own stance in different situations.

I’ve also noticed an improvement in my everyday communication, especially with my husband. As I practice expressing myself through writing, I feel more comfortable verbalizing my feelings and convictions. Overall, blogging has provided me with valuable practice in clarity and self-expression, and it has refined my communication skills both in writing and in my personal life.

Student’s choice: What is the importance of traditions in the family?

11/27/2025

Traditions can be powerful in bringing families together. They create familiarity, comfort, and a sense of belonging. At the same time, I’ve realized that some traditions can feel restrictive, especially when they no longer serve the people participating in them. As the holidays approach, I’ve felt this more than usual. I often feel pressure to buy gifts for my family, even though I know the items I pick out are usually small or quickly forgotten. Gift-giving is a tradition my family values deeply, but it isn’t something I personally enjoy, and that tension can make the season feel more stressful than meaningful.

I think traditions are important, but they shouldn’t become obligations that weigh us down. When something feels more like a box to check than a genuine expression of love or connection, it may be time to reassess. Traditions should evolve with the people who practice them. Sometimes we hold on simply because “that’s the way we’ve always done it,” even when the tradition no longer brings joy or purpose.

Reevaluating our traditions doesn’t mean abandoning family culture; it means making space for practices that feel authentic, uplifting, and beneficial for everyone involved.

Student’s choice: How do you manage having different interests than your significant other?

11/28/2025

My husband really enjoys rock climbing and being outdoors, while I don’t care much for it. I enjoy being outside and appreciating nature, but I also love coming home to a warm bed, a fresh shower, and spending time indoors before sunset. This is something my husband has always been aware of, and we’ve learned to find a good balance. He knows I don’t want every activity to revolve around the outdoors, but he also knows I’m willing to go camping for a weekend now and then.

Even though our hobbies are different, we love each other and support what the other enjoys. My husband now watches me play video games; he joins me for my shows, and he even goes window shopping with me at the mall, even though I know he’d probably rather be doing something else. In the same way, I sometimes join him outside; he joins me in the things I love.

At the end of the day, it’s less about the hobbies and more about spending time together.
